In most cases, you’ve got your campaign up and running, your click through ratio is pretty good or at least enough to keep your ad from being disabled. The problem you’re facing is :

Q1 - I’ve got all these clicks and no sales! How do I make sales?

I’ve you’ve received clicks and no sales then that means either one of two things :

    1) The product is not profitable - this would mean that the product sales copy is not good enough and therefore does not convert buyers. The fact that people search for the product would mean the product is in demand. Note that a product can be an amazing product but if the sales copy is not good at enticing buyers then no one will buy it! The solution? Trash the product and try another one!

    2) Unprofitable keywords - the keywords that you’ve chosen for your campaign are not profitable. In my experience some keywords convert a whole lot better than others. Your job is to find profitable keywords and delete all the unprofitable ones. The solution? Make sure you have at least 25 keywords in your campaign before you decide that the product is not profitable.

So let’s go into a little more detail.

    1) When you first create your campaign to test a product you must test a bunch of keywords and break them up into specific ad groups. Typically I create 5 ad groups with approximately 5 keywords in each ad group. That would mean I have a total of 5×5=25 keywords in my new campaign.

If you have only 3-5 keywords and you’re receiving clicks but no sales then try to add on more keywords. When I am first testing out a product, I only select keywords with 10 or more clicks per day. I then wait until my campaign receives 300 clicks and if by then I do not make a sale I trash the product and try a new one. My objective here is to achieve 300 clicks as quickly as possible so that I can determine if the product is profitable without wasting too much time. This is the reason I select keywords with more than 10 clicks/day.

Tip : I use the Adwords Accelerator tool and it tells me how many estimated clicks my keywords will receive. Alternatively you could use the free Google Adwords Traffic Estimator tool. More on keyword tools in my next few posts.

    2) Once you’ve got your 25 keywords up and running, wait till your campaign receives approximately 300 clicks. If you haven’t made any sales then move on to another product. Don’t get discouraged and keep on trying. I currently have 4 campaigns promoting 4 very different types of products. I’ve tested close to 100 products and only came up with 4 profitable ones. You’ve just got to keep on going!

    Vee: Very useful article!
